About Steve Evans
Steve works from his 2nd floor studio in a historic building in central Timaru. He has followed in his father's footsteps in becoming a jeweller, having completed his apprenticeship in the mid 80's and now has more than 25 years experience designing and making a wide range of jewellery.
"I get great satisfaction from seeing the excitement and pleasure people get when their dream creation is brought to life".
A lot of Steve's commissions are for pieces that mark a significant moment in peoples lives, engagements, weddings, anniversaries, special birthdays, but also pieces for pure pleasure. Diamonds and precious coloured gems are mainly used in these pieces and are made in a variety of metals including platinum, palladium, white and yellow gold.
Being able to source the gems required for these commissions requires some good contacts. Diamonds are all sourced from within New Zealand and are guaranteed to be from non conflict sources.
Coloured gems that cannot be sourced from local merchants can be found through contacts in Australia, Thailand and Nepal. A long time friend and colleague, Lester Hitchcox spends his time between Thailand and Nepal and provides a valuable source for hard to find gems or just simply unique and different gems.
One of Steve's passions is designing and commissioning unique silver jewellery to be made in Nepal by Nepali brothers and silversmiths, Bishnu & Balkrishna. Using gems sourced through friend Lester Hitchcox, Steve designs a variety of pieces while on his regular visits to Nepal.
"The double benefit from this arrangement is that I can offer beautiful unique silver jewellery of an international quality at a price that is well below what it would be if I made it in New Zealand, and Bishnu & Balkrishna have much needed extra income".
